Co-Opera at the Adelaide Showgrounds

Our History at the Showgrounds

Co-Opera has enjoyed a 18 year association with the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia. In 1991 and 1992 our first public performances as a newly formed Company were in the Royal Show Theatrette during Show Week (since demolished... we don't believe there was a connection). In 1993 our first touring piece, Il Pagliacci , was rehearsed in Centennial Hall and premièred in the Royal Show Theatrette. That production was bought by Country Arts SA and toured throughout South Australia .

On frequent occasions in subsequent years, Adelaide Showground spaces were made available for rehearsing and performing Co-Opera's touring productions. In 2001 the Society granted Co-Opera a formal Residency in the Wool Hall of the Showgrounds. It has been our home for rehearsing and occasional public performances regularly since then. This generous arrangement, easily our most important sponsorship, provides a home for Co-Opera throughout the year. In return, Co-Opera presents free operatic entertainment every day at the Royal Adelaide Show.

And in 2008?

In 2007 a sharp turn to the artistic left resulted in our presentation of favourite opera pieces being given decidedly popular treatment. Organisers have requested the same approach for 2008.
