After twelve years of successfully offering opera to all Australian States and Territories, Co-Opera is delighted to be presenting its first operetta, the comedy classic Die Fledermaus.
Die Fledermaus is glamorous, gorgeous and overflowing with champagne music. The plot abounds with confusion and disguise as Falke masterminds his “Bat's Revenge”. The characters are colourful and extreme, ranging from a passionate Italian tenor to a drunken, confused jailer.
This operetta is best known for the famous “Laughing Song” which Adele sings at the ball where she is discovered wearing a gown stolen from her mistress' wardrobe. Rosalinda, her mistress is also present in disguise as an exotic Hungarian Countess. She plans to secretly witness her husband's last night fling before he is dragged off to jail for insulting a policeman. Confusion mounts but after dancing, drinking and mutual reproach all are able to join in a rousing hymn in praise to the King Champagne.
Sung in English, Co-Opera's production features a new generation of talented young singers. The music is ravishing and captivates with its free spirited humour. |
